Freelance payment agreements that reduce disputes
Write scope, price and payment timing before you start. A clear record helps more than a long chat history.

Most freelance payment problems start as fuzzy chats: “Can you just tweak this?” turns into unpaid hours. You do not need a 20-page contract for every Instagram lead, but you do need a written summary both sides can find later.
Put these points in writing
- What you will deliver (and what you will not)
- Total price or hourly rate and currency
- When payment is due (deposit, milestones or on delivery)
- How revision rounds work
- What happens if the client pauses or cancels
Send that summary in the same thread or as a payment request the client can open and accept. The Competition Bureau’s guidance on buying and selling online stresses clear terms and records if something goes wrong (Competition Bureau (opens in a new tab)).
Reduce non-payment risk
Ask for a deposit before major work when you do not know the client. Keep messages that change scope. Invoice against the written summary, not against memory.
Paxtra is being built so service details and price sit in one request the client can review before paying. That is meant to clarify the deal, not to guarantee every client will pay on time.
If payment never arrives, your records and your payment method’s dispute options matter more than a polite chat apology. See also deposits before starting work and clear payment terms.
